Occupational Health Sites
Occupational Health/ Occupational Medicine is a unique subspecialty that PAs can work in blending together urgent care, primary care, infectious disease, & preventive health services. PAs working in occupational health can expect to perform some bedside procedures (i.e. laceration repairs, foreign body removals, initial fracture and burn management) in addition to potentially being required to obtain their medical examiner license to complete Department of Transportation physical exams.
When working in occupational medicine, sometimes a company (or "employer") is the client, in additional to the actual patient. It can be challenging and rewarding to balance providing evidence-based care for patients while navigating cost-effective care for the employers. Promotion of safety and wellness are key components in occupational medicine.
PAs working in occupational health may find themselves in a variety of settings, including onsite with employees (including airports or construction sites!), or at a separate clinic or hospital where employees come to them with work or non-work-related illnesses and injuries. This specialty also allows for close collaboration with other allied health providers, such as physical therapists, occupational therapists, registered dietitians, and others!
When looking for occupational health jobs as a PA, there are several large, local or national organizations that employ PAs. However, also try searching broadly, such as "physician assistant jobs in occupational health" to find discrete companies/employers looking to hire.
