Steps to Begin Exploring a Job in PA/ Healthcare Management
Some management opportunities arise while employed at an institution as it grows and/ or restructures.
Keep your CV/ resume prepared with examples of leadership, managerial development, and service.
Know your worth. Your clinical skill set can be ample fodder for evidence of great managerial skills, such as communication, problem-solving, organization, leadership, time-management, interpersonal relationships, customer support, and innovation.
Look for opportunities to be involved and say yes. Many healthcare institutions require and benefit from extensive provider support for quality, policy-making, patient safety, analytics, technologic innovation, and patient care changes. Get to know your institution and model leadership behavior by getting involved and advocating for what's right.
Consider an advanced degree. A Masters in Business Administration (MBA) or Masters in Public Health - Healthcare Administration (MPH) can augment the validity of your experience and improve your ability to advocate for a promotion.
How to Look for Jobs
If a management opportunity arises through your own employer/ institution, you may be able to advocate for an inside hire and promotion to the position, especially if you're well-known to the practice. Involvement in your organization's policy-making, committees, and meetings can optimize your position to be aware of and be applicable for a promotion to management.
Check your institution's job boards for new positions using the search terms above. You may not be aware of opportunities in a different department or clinic but may be a good fit if you're experienced with the institution.
